Behind the Scenes

I'm Courtney. I'm an open book and would love to help you match a face behind a blog - an author behind her story - so if you're curious about anything else, feel free to contact me. For now, I decided to answer some commonly asked questions:

What are some of your bad habits?
I can’t sing/dance worth shit, but it’s never stopped me from trying and I never go a day without doing both. There are times when my craving for perfection exceeds my acceptance of a flawed reality, and the movie portraying my life doesn’t quite turn out the way I foresee it. Life is made up of gag reels, bloopers and deleted scenes, and a whole hell lot of them, and I forget that sometimes but at the end of the day, I try to learn from the mistakes I blindly made and remember that my life isn’t exciting enough to make it on Hollywood’s big screen anyway, so what am I so worried about?

What’s your favorite thing about yourself?
I tend to see the world from a fresh perspective, different than most. I wake up every morning with a rejuvenated sense of creativity and muse, and I just go without thinking, I take my steps without looking both ways and I jump without weighing the consequences. Spontaneity is key in my book, and I’m inspired very easily. The simplest things throughout the day will send me off to a whole nother world where I get to let my imagination run free. That’s what I like. I want things and I make them happen. Watching life happen isn’t good enough for me; I’m a creator with my two bare hands and the world's my playground.

What are some of your sweetest indulgences?
Coffee. Anytime, anywhere, anyhow, a cup of black ultimately makes my day. Roadtrips to the coast and walking barefoot along the beach, throwing my apron on and trying new recipes, exploring the city with no priorities or direction, yoga, retail therapy when I actually have paychecks that haven’t been spent and a little freetime, walking along railroad tracks, driving fast, a journal and a pen, The Food Network, off-the-beaten-path boutiques and bakeries, and singing offkey. I’m a sucker for organic granola, fruit smoothies, a good indie acoustic soundtrack, and an afternoon of sunshine and simplicity.

How do you run away from the world?
I grab my keys, get in the car and take a drive without a map or directions and just drive. I worship alone time when the going gets rough, and organizing my thoughts with no one other than me, myself and I is perfect and de-stressing.

What do you do in your free time?
With the little I do manage to find make amidst my busy schedule, I read, I write, I blog, I visit the gym regularly, I indulge in my weekly 90210/One Tree Hill/Prisonbreak/The Bachelor episodes, I paint the world through thoughts and music, and I go on adventures and soak up as much of the world as I can each and every day.

Where do I see myself ten years down the road?
As a fulltime student (senior stuck in the high school for the time being) and part-time boutique sales associate, I see it as though I’m just getting this life started and I have the world at my feet. I plan to stay around Seattle for a year or two and attend school, exploring what’s out there and what my heart wants to follow, studying a collective of journalism, business, fashion, and psychology. My plan is to later transfer to a university, either Washington State or University of Washington. In ten years I hope to be graduated from college with a Bachelor’s in whatever degree I decide on, living in urban southern California, working a steady job that keeps me on my toes and in love with the simple things, and settled down to someone who can provide me with the security, happiness and love that I need.

Is Seattle where your heart belongs?
I’m a born and raised city girl, I’ve grown up here and Seattle is the only thing I know. Rain, coffee and traffic are the highlights - and lowlights - of my everyday, need I say more? It has enough originality to keep me excited and passionate about , excellent enough food to keep my taste buds madly in love, interesting enough diversity to make me want to meet everyone that’s ever stepped foot on the city streets, beautiful enough vista to make me swoon every time I look out the window or take a drive somewhere along the outskirts, and… don’t even get me started on the shopping. I need to step outside my comfort zone and give my curiosity a run for its money though, thus I have my heart set on moving down to what I believe is paradise in a few years. I wish to travel the world one day, but I can’t if I’m too attached to my hometown city and don’t take a chance and step out of it.

From where does most of your inspiration derive?
Anywhere from listening to The Beatles to lazying in a hammock on a warm afternoon to seeing a photograph that strikes my attention. I get inspired from anything from a Dr. Seuss rhyme to hearing a familiar song on the radio or rays of sunshine streaming through my window pane amidst a bad week. I stumble across a Facebook status that gets me going or a good read or the perfect weather, and bam!, the magic has done its damage and I run with it without looking back.

If you could eat only a couple things for the rest of your life, what’d they be?
Coffee ice cream. Ice cream in general - chocolate chip mint, cookies’n’cream, french vanilla, it’s all heaven to me. Salads, apples, homecooked bread and muffins, and anything peanut butter. And I eat more cereal than what should even be healthfully/legally required, without remorse.

Do you drink anything besides coffee?
Believe it or not, if it were up to me, I’d boycott food and live entirely on liquids. Fruit smoothies and protein shakes are my specialty, but I’m a sucker for anything with caffeine or alcohol in the name: gin & tonic, coconut vodka, chocolate mint tea, vanilla milkshakes, cranberry seltzer, soy milk, OJ all put me in the best mood.

What are some words you live by?
“I can do anything who gives me strength,” Philippians 4:13, and “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do but what I hate, I do...I know that nothing good lives in me, that is in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do, but this I keep on doing,” Romans 7:15-23. Both are life verses I base my life and faith upon.

What is your favorite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?
If I haven’t decided to waste away my last day of the weekend at the Outlets or walking around downtown picking up inspiration from boutiques, walking the pier boardwalk, and giving Starbucks a run for its money, you can find me at home making it a lazy day. Sunday brunch is my weakness, as are blogging the afternoon away and curling up to tea and a good book. I run errands, take pictures of the unordinary, visit the gym, indulge in Target shopping sprees, drive around until I think of something to hold my attention, or experiment with new recipes.

What’s the best quality you can find in a person?
Honesty, loyalty, and spontaneity. If someone can keep me on my toes by their personality alone, my heart’s sold and I’m hooked. If someone can entertain me for the rest of my days to come, even better. And a mix of confidence and humility. If you’re interested in tasting everything the world has to offer, I welcome you into my life.
